The role:
You must be a member of the Accredited register of Medical Illustrators to be considered for this post. To help provide a comprehensive Medical Illustration Service to NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde, including clinical photography, general photography, image management, design and print services and video production, and to actively promote the service within the GGC. This post is peripatetic and the post holder will be required to provide a weekly cross cover photography service from any NHSGGC base according to the clinical needs of the service. The post holder will participate in all aspects of clinical and scientific photography for direct care and diagnosis, education research and publication, as well as general photography for PR and publication.
Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:
- An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and adaptable Clinical Photographer to join the Medical Illustration team within NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde in the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital
- The shift pattern for this post is Monday to Friday including long and short shifts
Key responsibilities:
- Undertake clinical photography for patients as requested by healthcare professionals, ensuring high quality images are produced for clinical assessment, medical records, teaching, publication, and research
- Support the creation of clinical training materials through the use of digital video and audio recording equipment
- Manage and prioritise own caseload of patients and clients, maintaining accurate, high quality records in accordance with organisational standards
- Demonstrate professional patient handling skills across a range of environments, including studios, clinics, wards, and operating theatres-often involving sensitive, intimate, or invasive procedures
- Communicate complex information to patients and carers sensitively and tactfully, particularly regarding consent options, confidentiality, and the use of clinical images
- Conduct medico legal photography on behalf of NHSGGC, including cases involving non accidental injury (NAI) and clinical negligence, with the potential requirement to act as an expert witness
- Carry out non clinical photography for research, publication, exhibition, and public relations activities. This includes documenting accidents, malicious damage, and major incidents for litigation purposes
Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:
- Degree in Medical Illustration / Clinical Photography, or a Degree in Photography supported by a Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Photography
- Ongoing registration with the AHCS Accredited Register for Medical Illustrators
- Evidence of current Continued Professional Development (CPD)
- Previous clinical experience within a healthcare or clinical photography environment
- Fundamental knowledge of digital photography, image processing workflows, and current design trends
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, demonstrating the ability to work effectively with patients, carers, and multidisciplinary teams
- Basic working knowledge of both PC and Apple Macintosh operating systems, along with relevant photography and image processing software

From 1 April 2026, the Agenda for Change full-time working week will reduce from 37 hours to 36 hours. Part time working hours will be reduced on a pro rated basis. A corresponding increase in the hourly rate will apply, ensuring that overall pay remains unchanged.
