Job Overview
Warhead Senior Safety Assessment Specialist – Location: Coulport, 20 minutes north of Helensburgh (Scotland). Package up to £65k depending on experience. Core working hours 07 45, Monday to Thursday.
Responsibilities
- Lead complex safety analyses across warhead products, shaping design for safety strategies.
- Deliver high quality safety assessments that support compliant decision making throughout the product lifecycle.
- Manage the TSA Safety Case and provide specialist safety case expertise on behalf of the TSA Facility Operator.
- Ensure all activities remain within the bounds of the current safety case, signing off maintenance concessions and contributing to long term safety case strategies.
- Guide the interpretation and application of safety assessment outputs, developing design safety options that reinforce AWE’s global safety standards.
- Work closely with project teams and stakeholders to apply technical safety expertise across nuclear, radiological, chemical, and explosive hazards.
Qualifications
- Degree or equivalent Level 6 qualification in mechanical, electrical, nuclear or a closely related engineering discipline.
- Proven experience in developing, maintaining, and justifying safety cases, including safety reviews, concessions, and lifecycle safety assurance.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with excellent report writing and presentation abilities.
- Demonstrated ability to apply technical skills across the nuclear lifecycle, from projects through decommissioning.
- Experience applying skills across multiple hazard types (e.g., proportional risk assessment).
- Extensive experience in safety assessment for radiological, chemical, and/or explosive hazards.
- Background in nuclear, high hazard and/or highly regulated environments.
- Experience across multiple domains (management system, front end, project design, commissioning, operations, decommissioning) within or outside AWE.
- Experience working within highly regulated, high hazard industries, ideally nuclear.
