Job Description
Job summary:We are looking for a Process Engineer to support the development and deployment of our industrial heat pump systems, with a focus on pressure and piping systems for external industrial projects and ensuring regulatory compliance. This is a rare opportunity to work on breakthrough clean energy technology with real industrial impact, as part of a fast-growing, well-backed startup.
Location:The role is based at our facilities outside Edinburgh. This is an in-person role and candidates must have a permanent right to work in the UK.
Responsibilities and Duties
The Engineer will support the development and deployment of SynchroStor’s industrial heat pump systems, with a focus on pressure and piping systems for external industrial projects and ensuring regulatory compliance. Responsibilities will include:
- Specifying and reviewing pressure and piping systems (PED/PSSR), including design specs, line lists and sizing of piping, valves and relief systems
- Defining pressure relief philosophy, including identification of credible overpressure scenarios
- Managing EPC contractors and reviewing technical deliverables
- Leading process safety activities (HAZIDs, HAZOPs, LOPAs and risk assessments)
- Supporting preparation of design dossiers and compliance documentation
- Developing internal standards and processes for pressure system design and assembly
- Supporting FATs, installation supervision and acceptance testing activities
- Developing and reviewing PFDs, P&IDs, and 2D CAD drawings for pressure and piping systems
- Undertaking occasional site visits (quarterly/biannual) as required
As is typical in a growing company, responsibilities may evolve over time, and the Engineer will be expected to take a pragmatic, hands-on approach across a range of activities.
Qualifications and Skills
- Degree (BEng/MEng) in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline
- 3+ years’ relevant industry experience in process, piping or pressure systems engineering
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or working towards chartership
- Experience or exposure to pressure equipment design and compliance (e.g. PED, PSSR)
- Familiarity with process safety methodologies (e.g. HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA), with potential to lead
- Experience with engineering calculations (e.g. piping, valve and relief sizing)
- Ability to develop and review technical specifications and contractor deliverables
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with sound engineering judgement
- Proficiency in Excel and MS Office; other engineering or modelling tools advantageous
- Clear and effective written and verbal communication skills
- Organised and detail-oriented, with ability to manage multiple workstreams
- Pragmatic and solutions-focused, able to balance engineering rigour with pace
- Interest in energy systems, thermodynamics or low-carbon technologies
Remuneration:SynchroStor offers a competitive pay scale, a defined contribution pension, and an EMI share option scheme.
