Role Overview
The NHS offers a newborn hearing screening service to every baby born. As a Hearing Screener at Princess Royal Maternity in Glasgow, you will carry out hearing screening tests and may be required to travel to other locations on occasion. Full training will be provided. No formal qualifications are required, but you must have experience handling newborns, be comfortable working face to face with patients in a healthcare setting, possess good computer skills and be flexible with working hours.
All other roles will be assessed for sponsorship eligibility in line with current Home Office requirements. NHSGGC can only issue a Certificate of Sponsorship where these are met.
Working Conditions
- Location: Princess Royal Maternity Hospital
- Permanent contract
- Part time, 20 hours per week
- Monday to Sunday. You will work daytime hours and be required to work weekends on a rota basis. The post includes working 3 weekend days across 2 weekends in every 4 week period.
Key Responsibilities
- Identify which babies require screening
- Liaise effectively with parents, team members and other healthcare professionals to ensure screening can be undertaken
- Carry out the hearing screening of newborn babies within the maternity units and out reach clinics, and accurately record clinical and test data
- Promote a professional, welcoming and caring environment endorsing a Family Friendly approach
- Maintain up to date knowledge of procedures and policies relevant to this post, including infection control
- Maintain the confidentiality of babies and their families at all times
- Ensure the safety and security of equipment at all times and report any problems to the Hearing Screening Co ordinator at the earliest opportunity
Qualifications, Training and Experience
- Essential
- No formal qualifications are required but evidence of successful study would be desirable
- Previous experience in a multidisciplinary healthcare setting, preferably within a similar environment
- Previous experience handling newborn babies
- Well developed communication, interpersonal, time management and customer care skills
- Basic computer skills
- Professional and pleasant approach when carrying out all duties
- Ability to work independently or as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Concern for and understanding of people and their rights
- Awareness of patient confidentiality issues and understanding of health, safety and environmental issues in the workplace
- Desirable
- Knowledge of or an interest in audiology or hearing impairment is an advantage
