Job Summary
The Vice President, Underwriter is responsible for leading and managing a significant portfolio of assumed retro, London Market D&F, Global, and International reinsurance within the Global Catastrophe portfolio. This role carries broader authority for portfolio performance, market engagement, strategic contribution, and complex underwriting decision-making.
About the Role
- Lead the underwriting and active management of a significant portfolio of reinsurance and retrocessional catastrophe accounts across global markets.
- Take ownership for portfolio profitability, catastrophe loss evaluation, and performance monitoring for assigned business.
- Make complex underwriting decisions within delegated authority and provide guidance on referrals, structure, and pricing strategy.
- Build and deepen senior broker and client relationships to support business development and market positioning.
- Contribute to portfolio strategy, planning, and steering to ensure alignment with business objectives, risk appetite, and underwriting guidelines.
- Monitor, analyze, and communicate market, technical, and portfolio developments to inform underwriting strategy and business decisions.
- Partner with actuarial, cat modeling, claims, and other internal stakeholders to support disciplined underwriting and portfolio optimization.
- Support and, where appropriate, mentor more junior underwriters while contributing to broader team capability and market presence.
Work Experience and Qualifications Technical Skills
- Deep knowledge of retrocession, reinsurance, and insurance structures across global catastrophe markets.
- Strong, established relationships with brokers and market participants in the reinsurance sector.
- Advanced expertise in reinsurance pricing techniques, catastrophe models, and portfolio analytics.
- Demonstrated ability to assess complex risk structures and translate market intelligence into underwriting actions.

- Strong leadership presence with the ability to influence decisions across internal and external stakeholders.
- Excellent judgment, accountability, and the ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced and complex market environment.
- Highly effective written and verbal communication, negotiation, and relationship management skills.

Work Experience and Education
- 10+ years of reinsurance industry experience, including significant exposure to catastrophe underwriting, portfolio management, and market-facing responsibilities.
- University degree in a numerate, business, or related discipline preferred.
- Relevant professional designations or advanced underwriting qualifications are considered an asset.
