Vehicle Examiner
Murrayburn Depot
Salary: £34,452 – £40,501 (pro rata for part time)
Hours: 14 per week
- Carry out Fitness For Use checks (MOTs) and Licensing Condition checks on taxis and private hire vehicles on behalf of the City of Edinburgh Council, Midlothian Council and West Lothian Council.
- Be a fully skilled and qualified tradesperson (City & Guilds level three or equivalent experience). A clean driving licence is essential. Good communication skills are required. Membership of a professional body (IRTE) or equivalent is desirable.
- Hold a valid DVSA (MOT) Tester Certificate (Class IV). If not held at appointment, it must be obtained within six months.
- Test and examine all taxis and private hire vehicles to a standard defined by the DVSA and member authorities.
- Identify vehicle defects and assess compliance with current DVSA (MOT) standards and partner Licensing Authorities.
- Ensure all specialist vehicle Licensing conditions specified by Licensing Authorities are fully complied with.
- Complete DVSA (MOT) inspection documentation, issue the certificate, and, upon successful examination, issue taxi or private hire vehicle licensing condition compliance certificates while updating all relevant systems.
- Issue rectification or prohibition notices and any immediate suspensions. Plan and monitor remedial work and keep the Senior Vehicle Examiner updated.
- Carry out administration duties as directed by the Senior Vehicle Examiner, including technical enquiries and general administrative tasks, covering absences as needed.
- Work in accordance with the Council’s Health & Safety policy.
- Attend specialist and cascade training to stay conversant with current vehicular legislation and DVSA standards.
- Process relevant information, liaise with licence applicants, and arrange suitable vehicle examination appointments.
- Handle interactions with members of the public, service users, clients, staff, external agencies, and service providers professionally.
- Adapt to changing procedures and policies throughout the Service and contribute to service development.
- Subject to Basic Disclosure check, and if spent 3 months abroad in the last 5 years, an Overseas Criminal Record Check will be required.
