Job Description
The role:
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is one of the largest healthcare systems in the United Kingdom, employing approximately 40,000 staff across a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health services to a population of over 1.15 million people, and to a wider population of 2.2 million when regional and national services are included.
The unit provides specialist care for children and young people with haematological and oncological conditions, including leukaemia, malignant and non-malignant blood disorders, bone marrow transplantation, and molecular radiotherapy services. The post holder will work as part of a multidisciplinary team to deliver high-quality, holistic care to patients and their families.
All other roles will be assessed for sponsorship eligibility in line with current Home Office requirements. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) can only issue a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) where these are met.
Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:
- Permanent, Part-time
- 23 hours per week
- Shift pattern – within the shifts of Monday – Friday
- Base location – Royal Hospital for Children
Key responsibilities:
- Deliver excellent patient care in line with local policies and procedures.
- Assess, implement, and evaluate programmes of care for paediatric haematology and oncology patients.
- Provide patient-specific assessments, investigations, and treatments.
- Deliver holistic care and support to patients and their families throughout treatment.
- Actively participate in health promotion activities for this patient group.
- Manage and prioritise clinical tasks effectively alongside multidisciplinary team members.
- Care for children requiring bone marrow transplantation and provide follow-up support post-transplant.
- Support both elective and emergency admissions through the day care unit.
- Work collaboratively with inpatient wards and shared-care oncology/haematology centres to ensure seamless patient care.
- Educate families about treatment plans, ongoing care needs, and follow-up arrangements.
- Plan and coordinate patient follow-up appointments in accordance with individual treatment protocols.
Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:
- SACT (Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy) competence is essential.
- Essential knowledge of chemotherapy treatment protocols.
- Understanding of paediatric haematology and oncology care pathways.
- Ability to educate and support patients and families regarding treatment and care plans.
- Knowledge of assessment, care planning, implementation, and evaluation within paediatric haematology/oncology nursing.
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team and contribute to high-quality, specialist patient care.
