The role
The Assisted Conception Service (ACS) at Glasgow Royal Infirmary is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic registered nurse Band 5 Staff Nurse.
HFEA licensed service providing semen analysis, surgical sperm retrieval, sperm cryopreservation, ovulation induction, intrauterine insemination, in vitro fertilisation, intracytoplasmic sperm injection, embryo cryopreservation, donor insemination, oocyte donation, oocyte cryopreservation and pre implantation genetic testing.
The ACS laboratory delivers approximately 1100 cycles of IVF/ICSI and 600 frozen thawed embryo transfers and 300 IUIs annually. The Unit was awarded National Service Division funding to provide a Scotland wide PGT service in April 2005 and delivers approximately 75 cycles annually.
The post holder will join a dedicated nursing team and will participate in the assessment and treatment of infertility, delivering clinical work at an exceptionally high standard with meticulous attention to detail. The post holder must be a NMC registered nurse.
Duration, location and working pattern
Permanent, part time post of 22 hours per week. Salary is pro rata for part time hours. The role is based at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, with hours spread across 3 days out of 7.
Key responsibilities Clinical
- Assess patient needs, plan, implement and evaluate evidence based programmes of care, utilising all available resources and taking into account lifestyle, gender, cultural background and involvement of patient, family, carers and significant others.
- Create a culture where clinical practice is proactive and responsive to changing health care needs.
- Maintain patient records in line with NMC guidelines for records and record keeping.
- Provide evidence based information to patients and their partners to facilitate informed choices and establish informed consent.
Professional
- Practice within the legal and ethical framework established by the Nursing and Midwifery Council and national legislation, policy, guidelines and procedures.
- Work within NHS GGC, Health & Safety policy and guidelines and Executive (HSE) legislation.
- Empower patients to take responsibility for their health, well being and future lifestyle by practising in an open, transparent and inclusive manner, ensuring they have the relevant information to participate in decisions about their care.
- Promote and support innovation in clinical practice.
Education and research/training
- Contribute to the provision of an appropriate learning environment in line with NES quality placement standards.
- Demonstrate own professional development.
- Participate in research projects aimed at developing evidence based care within infertility and related areas to improve patient care.
- Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings where patient results are monitored, interpreted and treatment plans developed.
Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job Qualifications
- NMC registered nurse.
- Evidence of post registration training and continuing professional development.
Experience
- Working and practising in accordance with NMC standards.
- Gynaecology or fertility experience desirable but not essential.
- Code of professional conduct.
Training / skills
- Knowledge and competence in nursing and clinical audit.
- Certification and competency from the Resuscitation Council (UK) in Immediate Life Support or willingness to work towards.
- Presentational skills required – teaching is integral to the post.
- Training and competency in venepuncture desirable.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including influencing, negotiating and conflict management skills.
- Creativity and continuous improvement of service provision.
- IT skills.
