Position

Specialty Doctor in Emergency Medicine based at University Hospital Crosshouse.

Hours

40 hours per week. From 1 April 2026 the full time working week for NHS Agenda for Change staff in Scotland will be reduced from 37 to 36 hours (pro rata for part time staff) without loss of earnings.

UK Driving Licence

A UK driving licence is essential for this role.

What you will do

Provide first line medical care to patients attending the Emergency Department under the direction of Emergency Medicine Consultants, be fully involved in all clinical aspects in the ED including outpatient clinics, and progress towards successful completion of the Portfolio pathway. Leading departmental QI and development is also part of the role.

Responsibilities

  • Assessment, treatment and appropriate disposal of patients attending the unit.
  • Direct supervision of training grade doctors, including instruction in practical procedures and delegation of routine work in the Department.
  • Leading the department overnight with a consultant on call from home.
  • Review of radiology and laboratory reports.
  • Assisting and leading the review clinics held in the Out Patients Department.
  • Teaching the training grade doctors; expect to have completed or be ready to complete Advanced Life Support, Advanced Trauma Life Support and Advanced Paediatric Life Support courses.
  • Leading departmental QI projects.

Clinical Work

The post will be full time (10 PAs) with 8 DCC clinical sessions and 2 SPA sessions to develop the portfolio and progress towards CESR. Clinical work is delivered in a full shift pattern via self rostered shifts, including night shift. Entitlement to holidays and leave follows the new specialist doctor contract in Scotland. Shift rostering can be discussed for flexibility.

Qualifications

Experienced applicants must have full registration with the General Medical Council and a licence to practice.
