The role
Applications are invited for the post of Specialist Biomedical / Clinical Scientist within the Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (H&I) Laboratory at Gartnavel General Hospital, Glasgow. The laboratory provides a comprehensive H&I service supporting a range of clinical programmes.

- Gartnavel General Hospital
- Monday, Thursday and Friday, 08:30 to 16:30
- Please note the salary is pro rata for part time hours
Key responsibilities
- Contribute to a highly specialised, quality driven service performing molecular biology techniques for HLA typing and immunological methods for HLA antibody testing and cross matching.
- Analyse, interpret and report complex results to support solid organ and stem cell transplantation services.
- Rotate through antibody detection, molecular HLA typing and donor recipient cross matching, ensuring competence across all sections.
- Apply professional judgement to prioritise workload and deliver accurate results within agreed turnaround times.
- Provide advice and guidance to clinical and laboratory colleagues on testing pathways and results.
- Supervise, train and mentor less experienced scientific and support staff.
- Participate in quality assurance audit, service improvement and the out of hours on call rota.
Knowledge, training, qualifications and experience required
- Hold an Honours degree in a relevant biological science and be registered as a Biomedical Scientist or Clinical Scientist with the Health and Care Professions Council.
- Experience of working within a diagnostic laboratory environment performing complex scientific investigations.
- Knowledge of molecular biology and immunological techniques within a regulated quality framework.
- Ability to analyse, interpret and report complex or anomalous results using professional judgement.
- Strong communication skills with the confidence to advise clinical and laboratory users.
- Commitment to continuous professional development and maintaining fitness to practise.
