Base Location: Glasgow or London
Contract Length: 12 Months

Main Purpose of Job

The Senior Geophysical Engineer role is to support the successful delivery of offshore geophysical surveys and geohazard management on the clients and European operational offshore windfarms. The Senior Geophysical Engineer role sits in the Ground Engineering Team within the Site Engineering Department and reports to the Geophysical Lead. The Senior Geophysical Engineer will work with the Operation and Maintenance (O&M) team to ensure survey data and deliverables meet the O&M objectives.

Key Tasks

  • Manage site investigation activities from a geophysical engineering perspective across the O&M offshore project portfolio.
  • Overall responsibility for the successful delivery of geophysical surveys, including survey management. Regularly make important judgements, decisions and recommendations to ensure the Campaigns meet the strict programme and are delivered to specification and budget.
  • Identify where consultant/Owner’s Engineer support is required, define the scope of the support, and support and lead the technical and contractual tendering process.
  • Manage the Owner’s Engineer who perform the survey management, offshore client representation and/or data QC.
  • Support and lead the development of survey and survey management strategy, including survey duration and cost estimates.
  • Provide technical support and advice on survey and equipment types to be used for all survey campaigns across the business.
  • Develop geophysical survey scopes of work.
  • Support and lead the tendering and contractual negotiations for geophysical surveys ensuring appropriate risk management.
  • Ensure that O&M related seabed and sub-seabed geo and contractual risks on projects are identified and mitigated, including activities related to cables, scour, scour protection, turbine maintenance and major corrective works.
  • Ensure compliance with industry guidelines and best practice, and awareness of suppliers and latest developments in technology, including assessment of suitability of new technology to support O&M projects.
  • Support the delivery of multi-contract packages within time, to budget and to a high quality following the best industry practice and observing the maximum respect for health, safety and the environment to ensure regulatory and legal compliance.
  • Ensure lessons learned regarding offshore geophysics are captured, shared and solutions applied across the different projects through modification of documents, procedures and survey strategies.
  • Support the development, maintenance and modification of geophysical related standard documentation and procedures to ensure optimised geophysical site investigations.
  • Identify opportunities for improvements and innovation in the way the business acquires, manages, interrogates, interprets and uses geophysical data for the company’s operational and maintenance activities.
  • Support innovation projects on behalf of the company, engaging with the steering committee and prioritising the best interests of the company.

Key Criteria

  • Educated to degree level in a relevant geophysical, geological or highly relevant discipline.
  • Excellent experience in a variety of geophysical survey methods, including offshore acquisition, particularly for offshore wind farm development and O&M surveys (e.g. multi-beam echosounder (MBES) and side scan sonar (SSS .
  • Excellent experience in the processing and interpretation of geophysical datasets, with focus on O&M survey methods.
  • Excellent experience planning, managing and executing offshore geophysical site investigations for large scale projects with multiple vessel survey campaigns.
  • Experience in cable/pipeline/asset inspection surveys and/or asset burial surveys.
  • Experience in project management and budget control.
  • Knowledge of and / or experience engaging with the different stakeholders of an operational offshore wind farm and devising geophysical strategies to support them.
  • Experience balancing technical, commercial and programme requirements to ensure project objectives are achieved.
  • Experience with geophysical software tools relevant for O&M survey data (e.g. SonarWiz, Caris and GIS).
  • Experience influencing and developing key project and business decisions.
  • Experience supporting global teams and decision-making processes to achieve project objectives under challenging timelines and within a budget.
  • Experience communicating effectively and influencing decision making within a diverse team.

  • Experience dealing with health, safety and environmental legislation associated with site investigation and offshore operational projects.

  • IT literate with ability to operate MS Office and willingness to learn other IT based project management software.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Desirable: Experience of tendering and commercial aspects of geophysical surveys.
  • Desirable: Experience in the acquisition and application of a variety of geophysical methods for offshore wind farms.
  • Desirable: Experience of ground model development using geophysical datasets.
  • Desirable: Experience in the design, management, acquisition and QC of magnetometer and UXO survey.
  • Desirable: Chartered, or working towards chartered status (or relevant equivalent) with a relevant institution.
