Community arts charity Impact Arts is looking for x2 Music Leads
Job Title: Music Lead x2
Rate of pay: £23.60 a day = £165.20 per day
42 sessions, plus 6 days for induction, prep & evaluation
With inductions and some training likely at our Boardwalk premises in Merchant City, Glasgow.
Due to the working location, previous experience of working within a prison or similar setting is essential. If you believe you have comparable experience, please ensure this is clear on your application
Travel: Travel contribution of £35 per day, inclusive of training and prep/admin days.
Reporting to: Amanda Munro – Programme Manager
Duration of contract: 42 weeks plus 6 days for induction, prep & evaluation
Working hours: Wednesdays, 8am – 4pm, delivering two workshops a day, with a lunch break

As a Music Lead working in HMYOI Polmont’s performing arts space, you will work closely with your colleague to design and deliver workshops that are accessible to a variety of needs, and adaptable to the interests and skill level of the group. Importantly, they will be particularly responsive to the experiences and circumstances of the young people.
You will ensure that individual and group projects are possible, and that activity allows for reflection of the participant’s personal journeys, backgrounds and experiences. You will work with the Performing Arts Officer at Polmont to foster mentor opportunities where possible in the group setting, with an SQA accredited opportunity already in place via SPS.
This is a fantastic opportunity to work with some very talented young people in a challenging yet rewarding environment. You will use your wealth of personal and professional experience to provide participants with valuable insight into vocational pathways in the music industry.
Main Responsibilities
- Be responsible for the personal development and creative training of the young people on the programme
- With your colleague, oversee the planning and delivery of the workshops as well as data collection
- Support the Performing Arts Officer with recruitment and drumming up interest if required, with the aim to work with 40 young people over the project period (group size is limited to small numbers each session)
- Work closely with your colleagues to help participants nearing their release date prepare for a positive outcome upon departure where possible, with appropriate signposting
- Adhere to Impact Arts’ Child Protection Policy and Procedures and highlight any child protection concerns to the Designated Child Protection Officers and follow relevant SPS protocol
- Source materials in a sustainable manner, and work to a given budget when requesting purchases, prioritising kit that has longevity
- Produce detailed evaluation reports and case studies on the young people’s engagement and development
- You will need to build into your delivery plans methods for evaluating the outcomes that we are required to achieve which include:
- Develop their music and music making skills
- Those who would not normally have the chance to participate, take part in music making opportunities
- Improved communication skills
- Increased confidence & resilience
- Develop their skills for life, learning and work
- Improved health & wellbeing
Person Specification
Impact Arts is looking for people with the following qualities, experience, knowledge and competencies.
Qualifications & Experience
- At least two years’ experience of working with people in a prison or similar setting is essential, please only apply if you match this criteria. If you believe you have comparable experience, please ensure this is clear on your application
- Experience of delivering music workshops or teaching music in diverse community settings
- Experience of working with young people aged 18 to 25 in diverse community settings
- Applications from those with lived experience of the prison system are welcome
Technical Skills and Knowledge:
- Experience of planning and delivering exciting and adaptable music focused workshops
- Confident on at least two of the following: guitar, bass, drums or keyboard – with experience of teaching these instruments
- Confident with accessible music production tools and software (please list on application)
- Experience in creative/song writing workshops is desirable
- Knowledge and awareness of Koestler award application process is also desirable
Personal Skills & Qualities
- Ability to work closely with others with ease and flexibility
- Punctual with great time keeping and an ability to work to deadlines
- Enthusiastic, resourceful and motivated, with a person centred approach to delivering activity
- A passion for music, ideally across a broad range of genres
- Interpersonal skills including an empathetic manner, active listener and adaptable communication
- A flexible approach to session planning, open to unexpected change where required
- An up to date knowledge of and interest in issues that affect young people, particularly those in a prison setting
- A sense of humour and a passion for supporting young people
