The role:

An exciting opportunity has arisen for Health Care Support Workers (HCSW) to join the School Immunisation Team. HCSWs are responsible for ensuring the smooth running of the immunisation clinics. Responsibilities include maintenance of cold chain procedures, managing stock and supplies and communicating effectively with children, young people, educators, colleagues, parents and carers. HCSWs contribute to the safe and efficient delivery of immunisations to children in all areas of Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board.

Applicants should ideally have experience of working with children and an interest in Public Health and a desire to work within a skill mix team. Excellent communication skills and confidence using IT will be essential. Full training will be provided. Please note, this post requires PVG Scheme Membership / Disclosure Scotland Check.

All other roles will be assessed for sponsorship eligibility in line with current Home Office requirements. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) can only issue a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) where these are met.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:

  • These posts are aligned to the four school immunisation service areas and the post-holder will be expected to be flexible to support delivery across the teams below:
  • Renfrew and Inverclyde Team
  • East Renfrewshire and South Glasgow Team
  • North West Glasgow and West Dunbartonshire Team
  • North East and East Dunbartonshire

There are a number of posts available across the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Board area. While individual posts will be predominantly aligned to specific localities, all posts are employed on a GGC Board wide basis. As such, cross boundary working across the teams will be required at times to support service delivery.

  • Full time (36 hours per week) and Part time (18.72 hours per week) positions available.
  • The post is contracted over 12 months with annualised working terms and conditions. The working period of this post runs for 8 months from August to April with a non working period of 4 months from April to August.

Key responsibilities:

  • The Healthcare Support Worker will be responsible for delivering safe, efficient and person centred care to clients / families, as delegated and directed by the School Immunisation team.
  • The post holder will promote a culture of engagement with clients, families and carers, which includes a core approach of caring, compassion, courtesy, empathy and respect.
  • The post holder will promote the principles of self care to clients, families and carers and empower them to access and use health resources in their community.
  • Assist clients / families in relevant settings to address health promotion activities that can positively improve health and wellbeing.
  • Assist with the delivery of a variety of clinics such as immunisation and community drop in.
  • Assist with the delivery of planned screening such as completed parental consent forms.
  • Participate in the delivery of group work as appropriate to local need, for example supporting parent/carer groups to complete consent forms.
  • Accurately report back to Immunisation Lead Nurse (Schools) following school visits or other client related work.
  • Signpost families to a range of appropriate services to support their needs.
  • Provide practical support for parents and children or in terms of accessing other services and supports.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

  • SVQ Level 3 in Healthcare or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to work with people and as part of a team.
  • Ability to work without direct supervision.
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work with vulnerable children, young people and families.
  • Basic computing skills.
  • Car driver, driving within city / countryside environments.

Desirable:

  • Experience of working with children.
