Job Description
Our client, a leading company in the Defence & Security sector, is looking for a highly skilled FPGA Engineer to join their successful Power Products team within the Systems & Products department. This role is based in Glenrothes, Livingston, and offers a hybrid working environment.
As a Principal Firmware Engineer, you will be at the forefront of architecting complete control solutions for one or more Power Products, integrating contributions from various engineering disciplines. This position represents a unique opportunity for an experienced digital engineer to make a significant impact on a range of Power Product developments. Key Responsibilities:
- Assessing customer requirements and deriving detailed FPGA/Firmware requirements for complex systems.
- Collaborating with the Principal Hardware Engineer to architect control solutions from concept through to final production.
- Conducting modelling and simulations for control functions to be verified and validated.
- Developing model-based design processes and tools for rapid controller development.
- Ensuring designs meet industry standards such as RTCA DO-254 or equivalent.
- Liaising with academia and industry experts.
Job Requirements:
- Experience in VHDL-based FPGA design and verification techniques.
- Practical experience with FPGA technology from Xilinx, Altera, and/or Actel.
- Ability to debug and test new firmware designs and support module and system-level tests, verification, and integration.
- Strong understanding of circuit operation, with the ability to debug, diagnose, and implement fixes.
- Good problem-solving skills and a willingness to take ownership of tasks while contributing positively to cross-discipline teams.
- Proficiency in simulation tools like Matlab Simulink or Spice.
- Experience in system modelling.
- Proven technical leadership on development programmes.
- Experience interpreting customer specifications and end-use environments.
- Track record of working with customers to develop and manage technical requirements through product development.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to tailor communications to different audiences at all levels.
- Willingness to travel within the UK, Europe, and the US.
- Eligibility or current holder of SC security clearance.
Desired Skills:
- Experience using Mentor Graphics tool suite, including DxDesigner, Constraints Editor, HyperLynx tools, Signal Integrity & Power Analyser, and SystemVision simulation, or equivalents.
- Strong analytical skills in circuit simulation and thermal analysis.
- Design experience with Inverter and Power Factor Correction power supplies and exposure to other topologies.
- Experience working with industry-standard toolsets, such as DOORS.
Required Education/Experience:
- BEng/MSc/MEng/PhD in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or a related field, with specialisation in FPGA/Firmware/digital design techniques and embedded development.
