Job Description

  • Carry out regulatory activities and, where required, enforce various statutes
  • Assist the Service Manager and Lead Officers in discharging Environmental Health functions
  • Carry out operational and professional Environmental Health duties allocated within the team remit
  • Investigate and enforce alleged contraventions of legislation
  • Inspect businesses and premises
  • Assess applications related to licensing
  • Work independently and collaboratively with team members
  • Work with and refer to other Council services and partner organisations
  • Food & Workplace Safety: conduct inspections, interventions and investigations concerning food law, workplace health and safety, port health, communicable diseases and licensing
  • Public Protection: investigate Private Housing Standards complaints, assist with caravan site licensing, undertake statutory nuisance investigations, respond to planning consultations and help develop Housing, Nuisance and Enforcement projects
  • Participate in out-of-hours standby incidents and attend public meetings

Requirements

  • Must hold the REHIS Diploma in Environmental Health or have REHIS confirmation of qualification equivalency
  • Applications welcome from individuals due to sit REHIS Professional Examinations at the autumn 2026 diet
  • Detailed knowledge of Environmental Health subject material relating to food and workplace safety or public protection
  • Knowledge of other Environmental Health legislation
  • Detailed knowledge of Environmental Health enforcement procedures
  • Ability to meet targets and work to deadlines
  • Sound organisational ability
  • Rational, methodical approach to problem solving
  • Ability to work and lead effectively within a team
  • Strong interpersonal skills and excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work outside normal hours, including participation in the Standby Service, is required
