A vacancy has arisen for an experienced Energy & Sustainability Manager to join the Climate Change & Sustainability Team that is delivering the net zero and sustainability agenda at NHS Forth Valley.

This role reflects the importance the organisation places on the net zero agenda and signals our intent to take significant steps to contribute to decarbonising the estate and reducing the impact of our activities.

The post holder’s primary focus would be on energy management, carbon reduction and achieving the Board’s net zero ambitions. However, there will also be a requirement to support delivery of the Board’s wider climate emergency response.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage utilities – driving down consumption and costs to reduce carbon emissions.
  • Manage utility supplier contracts including supporting the timely validation and processing of invoices to ensure service continuity.
  • Manage and analyse consumption of utilities, across complex utilities distribution networks at multiple sites with ageing infrastructure, to monitor trends and target efficiencies in relation to utilities consumption and cost.
  • Develop a metering, monitoring and targeting strategy to underpin the Board’s decarbonisation plan.
  • Develop systems and procedures to ensure compliance with relevant legislation and regulations relating to management of utilities, ensuring that these processes and records are auditable.
  • Collate and analyse utility consumption, cost and carbon footprint data for submission as part of statutory annual carbon emissions reporting.
  • Inform regular reporting on utilities consumption, costs and carbon emissions to senior management groups and other stakeholders.
  • Identify “spend to save” projects to support the Board’s Cost Improvement plans.
  • Lead in development and implementation of decarbonisation, impact reduction and sustainability projects.
  • Identify funding opportunities for decarbonisation and sustainability projects.
  • Provide support and analysis for Business Cases.
  • Support development and implementation of the Board’s Environmental Management System.
  • Develop internal and external communications forums to promote decarbonisation, environmental management and the wider sustainability agenda.

About you

  • A relevant degree, or equivalent experience, in an energy, environmental management, sustainable development or related discipline.
  • Experience of energy and environmental management within a public sector or complex estate environment, ideally within the NHS or a similar large scale environment.
  • In depth technical knowledge of energy, environmental management and sustainable development policies and practice.
  • Experience of managing and delivering energy efficiency and environmental improvement projects and developing business cases.
  • You must evidence ability to work well with others, have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a well developed organisational ability.

As from 1/4/26, the Agenda for Change full time working week will be reducing from 37 to 36 hours per week. Part time hours will be reduced pro rata. However, there will be a corresponding increase in the hourly rate so that pay will not be affected.
