Help write women back into Scotland’s history – and our future

At Protests and Suffragettes, we’re building a Scotland where the stories of suffragettes and women changemakers aren’t hidden footnotes, but vibrant, public, and everywhere – in schools, museums, murals, and on Wikipedia and the open web. Over the next three years, we’re scaling workshops, murals, creative commissions, and a national community that will reshape how women’s history is remembered, celebrated, and taught – ramping toward the 2028 Centenary of the Equal Franchise Act.

We’re looking for a Community Research & Partnerships Assistant – Writing Women Back (Argyll) to help us pilot a new, place-based approach to researching women’s history and building meaningful local partnerships in rural Scotland. If you’re someone who loves local history, enjoys connecting with people and organisations, and is excited by uncovering overlooked stories and helping them reach wider audiences, come build this with us!

Purpose

The Community Research & Partnerships Assistant – Writing Women Back (Argyll) supports Protests and Suffragettes CIC’s mission to inspire the next generation of changemakers by writing women back into Scotland’s history, with a specific focus on rural and underrepresented histories in Argyll.

This role combines community-focused historical research with partnership building – helping us recover stories of women’s activism in rural contexts, and helping to strengthen our relationships with local organisations, schools, heritage centres, and community groups. The post holder will contribute to a pilot model for geographic expansion, informing how Protests and Suffragettes works in other regions of Scotland as we grow toward the 2028 Centenary of the Equal Franchise Act.

This is a supportive, skill-building role, well suited to someone returning to work or looking to develop experience within Scotland’s third sector, arts, heritage, or social enterprise landscape. This post is funded by InspirAlba, a charity in Argyll which supports rural employability and creates opportunities for individuals facing barriers to work.

Key Responsibilities Community research (Argyll focus)

  • Support and conduct archival and desk-based research into women’s activism and suffrage history in Argyll, with a focus on rural and underrepresented narratives.

  • Contribute to the collation and organisation of research findings for future workshops, educational resources, or creative outputs.
  • Support ethical, community-centred approaches to research, in line with Protests and Suffragettes’ values.
  • Help identify and build relationships with local organisations in Argyll, including heritage centres, schools, arts organisations, and community groups.
  • Support initial outreach to potential partners and maintain records of contacts and conversations.
  • Assist with setting up meetings, visits, and conversations with local stakeholders.
  • Support the development of partnerships that may lead to creative and Wikipedia workshops, talks, research collaborations, co created murals, and other collaboratively developed creative projects, or community led projects.

Education and community engagement support

  • Support engagement with schools and educational organisations in Argyll that have previously received Protests and Suffragettes education packs.
  • Assist with gathering local context and insights to inform future workshops or resources.
  • Contribute ideas for place based engagement rooted in local histories and community interests.

  • Assist with basic reporting or summaries of activity for internal use and funder updates.
  • Support online meetings, calls, or digital communications as required.

Person Specification

  • An interest in women’s history, social justice, activism, or community heritage.
  • Confidence in communicating with people and organisations via email, phone, and video calls.
  • Ability to work independently and manage tasks remotely, with support from the team.

  • Familiarity with Argyll, rural communities, or place based community work.
  • Experience working with community groups, schools, or third sector organisations.
  • Interest in learning about Wikipedia editing as a form of knowledge activism.

  • Collaborative, supportive, and kind.
  • Comfortable working remotely with clear communication.
  • Willing to ask questions and learn new tools and processes.
