Clinical Teaching Fellow

NHS Dumfries and Galloway – Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary

For 12 months from 05/08/26 to 03/08/27

Overview

Appointment to assist in delivery of undergraduate surgical teaching within the hospital. Suitable candidates will have completed Foundation training or equivalent as a minimum. This post would suit an existing trainee wishing out of programme experience in medical education, or any doctor wishing to improve educational skills.

Responsibilities

  • Organise and help deliver teaching to 3rd and 4th year surgical students on rotation from Glasgow University, including bedside teaching, tutorials, simulation and educational supervision.
  • Dedicate approximately 5 sessions per week to teaching, with the majority focused on Glasgow University’s Surgical students; remaining teaching time may support students in other specialties and from other universities (St Andrews, Dundee, Edinburgh).
  • Cover the remaining 5 sessions with clinical duties on inpatient surgical wards, including supporting foundation doctors, assessing acutely unwell patients, managing medical co-morbidities in surgical patients, and liaising with the senior surgical team.
  • Development time is anticipated to be taken when students are on holiday.
  • Explore on call opportunities through the internal locum bank if desired (medicine, surgical or emergency medicine depending on experience).
  • Support Glasgow and other university students’ teaching programs as part of Dumfries and Galloway teaching activity.

Qualifications

  • Completion of Foundation training or equivalent (minimum).
  • Interested in medical education with a view to developing teaching skills; suitable for an existing trainee seeking out of programme experience or any doctor wishing to improve educational skills.

Additional Information

NHS Dumfries and Galloway serves a-population of around 148,500 within a large geographical area (approx. 2,400 square miles) and employs approximately 4,500 staff. The new Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary is a 344-bed hospital. The role may include on-call opportunities as part of the internal locum bank, if desired.
