Fixed Term for 12 – 36 Months Salary Scale
£47,438 – £62,758 + On-call Banding Supplement (50%)
This is a unique opportunity to undertake original research and be based in Inverness, Scotland. Applications are invited from surgeons in training who wish to undertake a period of full time research, or deliver education, leading towards a post-graduate degree. The Academic Surgical Unit is run by Professor Angus Watson, Professor Ken Walker and Ms Katrina Knight.
There are a variety of options available. We welcome applications from surgeons who wish to undertake original research leading to the award of an MD or PhD. Other postgraduate degree options include registering for an MSc in Health Science (University of Aberdeen), the distance learning ChM in General Surgery (University of Edinburgh) or an MSc in Medical Visualisation with Glasgow School of Art.
If successful you will be based in the University of Aberdeen Research and Education Unit offices in Inverness. You will take part in the middle grade surgical rota at Raigmore Hospital, covering weekday nights and weekends. You will also be responsible for delivering surgical teaching to medical students both from the University of Aberdeen and ScotGEM. Options exist to partner with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh’s SERI Lab (Surgical Education Research and Innovation Lab). Current research themes include Robotic Assisted Surgery, multi-centre clinical studies, early diagnostics and surgical training.
The unit has an enviably high completion rate for post-graduate degrees.
The Department of Surgery at Raigmore Hospital is based in the City of Inverness, the capital of the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. The unit is composed of 21 consultant surgeons working in the specialties of breast, colorectal, upper GI/HPB, vascular and urology. There are 6 middle grade surgeons in addition to one international fellow. There are strong links with our sister hospitals throughout the Highlands and Islands.
