Job Description

ROYAL INFIRMARY of EDINBURGH HOSPITAL EDINBURGH Department of Neurosurgery X 3 Clinical Fellow Posts

NHS Lothian is committed to encouraging equality and diversity among our workforce and eliminating unlawful discrimination. The aim is for our workforce to be truly representative and for each employee to feel respected and able to give their best.

We welcome applications from all sections of society. We will fully support disabled candidates, and candidates with long term conditions or who are neurodivergent by making reasonable adjustments to our recruitment policy and practices.

The posts are Fixed Term, full time (40 hours per week) based in Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh Hospital.

You will work as part of our broader neurosciences team, in a new purpose built hospital, serving a population of approximately 1.8 million people in south east Scotland. A team of 12 neurosurgical consultants provide most neurosurgical subspecialties.

Neurosurgery Clinical Development Fellows will manage neurosurgical patients on the ward. The Fellows will also have opportunities to assist in theatre, attend sub specialty MDTs, and assist in the outpatient department.

This is a one year clinical development fellow post in neurosurgery, designed for junior doctors interested in becoming neurosurgeons or in allied specialties such as interventional neuroradiology, spinal surgery, or other allied surgical specialties.

Three posts are available annually, starting the first Wednesday in August each year. The post is ideally suited to a post Foundation doctor looking to improve knowledge and skills to enhance competitiveness for neurosurgery national selection, although the skills learnt will translate across specialties.

The fellow will be encouraged to become involved in research, audit, and QI projects and will be mentored by consultants and neurosurgical trainees.

The fellow will learn a range of clinical skills including lumbar puncture, shunt valve modulation, management of external CSF drainage systems, and will have opportunities to assist in theatre and learn basic neurosurgical procedures. These posts do not have educational approval.
