Job Description
The Role
- Process a broad range of specialist and routine laboratory diagnostic investigations in Biochemistry using a range of scientific measurements and technical procedures on patient samples.
- Provide advice to clinicians and other healthcare staff as to appropriateness of tests and time scales.
- Responsible for own work and uses specialist training to operate complex equipment and solve problems.
- Acts as a mentor to less experienced Biomedical Scientists and participates in training/supervision of Trainee Biomedical Scientists and Medical Laboratory Assistants.
The working pattern for this role is various shifts – backshifts, night shift and weekends.
Applicants who do not meet the essential criteria will be considered under the Annex 21 training programme, where they will be paid a percentage of the top of Band 5 and on completion of training will then move on to Band 6 scale.
Key Responsibilities
- Adherence to policies and procedures relevant to all areas of work in accordance with departmental, directorate, hospital and regulatory requirements.
- Validate and authorise clinical laboratory results, issuing reports/results to service users such as clinicians. Recommend further tests or actions when required with referral to more senior staff or consultant as appropriate.
- Participate in the evaluation and implementation of new equipment and analytical procedures.
- Daily instrument testing, first line maintenance, repair, technical fault finding and performance of quality control on a daily basis for equipment for own use and for other staff to operate.
Qualifications
- State registration with the Health Professions Council is mandatory.
- BSc honours degree in Biomedical Science or equivalent, which is acceptable for Health Professions Council registration.
- Formal evidence of specialist knowledge of a range of discipline specific procedures.
- Evidence of continuing professional development, for example, a specialist portfolio of development, attendance at specialist courses, training on new instrumentation, and learning through reflective practice.
