Role Overview
Principal 2nd Violin to join the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra is Scotland’s national broadcasting orchestra, performing worldwide. The 2024/25 season includes international touring and broadcasting across BBC Radio and television. The orchestra commissions new music and hosts the Tectonics Festival. It collaborates with the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and supports young talent through competitions. The Chief Conductor is Ryan Wigglesworth and the Principal Guest Conductor is Delyana Lazarova.
Key Responsibilities and Impact
- Sit as Principal Second Violin stepping up as required, maintaining a high standard of professional playing and musical and artistic excellence required by the Orchestra.
- Familiarise oneself with the relevant parts, including solos, in advance of the first rehearsal and performances.
- Support professionally any Leaders and Conductors engaged by the Orchestra.
- Take responsibility for the style, intonation, balance, ensemble, rhythm and preparation of the section in conjunction with Leaders and the Chief Conductor.
- Foster an environment in which artistic excellence flourishes.
- Develop and support positive working relationships with all other members of the Orchestra, the section and any freelance players engaged by the Orchestra.
Skills and Experience
- Extensive experience as Principal Second Violin stepping up as required. Playing solos and full orchestral repertoire to the highest standards.
- Effective and committed team player, playing a full role in the life of the Orchestra.
- Effective and committed team leader when leading the Section.
- Maintaining artistic excellence and encouraging the same in others.
- Collaboration with colleagues, management and conductors.
