The University of Glasgow, Small Animal Hospital is seeking to recruit a part time Veterinary Clinician to join our Out of Hours Emergency Service. Our team provides emergency cover for a large number of local practices, offering an excellent opportunity to develop skills across a broad range of medical, surgical, emergency and critical care cases. We also benefit from close collaboration with the hospital’s specialist referral services and newly launched Primary Care Practice.

This post offers the opportunity to investigate and treat cases to a high standard, while also contributing to the clinical training of undergraduate students and interns within a supportive academic environment.

This is a 0.2 FTE post based on a full time 35 hour week, with a generous holiday allowance. The role typically involves either one shift every two weeks, or one two day weekend every four weeks.

Possible shifts include:

  • Night shifts: 7pm-8am
  • Weekend/Public Holiday Day shifts: 7:30am-8:30pm
  • Backshifts: 11am-11pm or 12pm-12am

Shift times are fixed, but working days can be arranged flexibly to suit the successful candidate. A weekend only working pattern without night shifts can be accommodated if preferred. Backshifts are particularly suitable for less experienced clinicians, as they do not involve sole charge.

The successful candidate will hold a veterinary degree registrable with the RCVS and have post graduate clinical experience as a veterinary surgeon. Previous emergency experience is desirable, although applicants with relevant general practice experience are also encouraged to apply.

Job purpose

To deliver an efficient and effective small animal out of hours emergency service for local first opinion practices by providing expertise and clinical activity to the Small Animal Hospital (SAH). To enhance and develop the delivery of clinical teaching to undergraduates and clinical scholars. Thereby to contribute to objectives relating to national and international excellence in clinical service and teaching.

Main Duties and Responsibilities Clinical

  • To contribute to the small animal out of hours emergency service by providing a high quality service for pet owners and liaising with external first opinion practices, thereby maintaining a clinical out of hours first opinion and referral workload necessary to support teaching and research activities.
  • To support the provision of high quality medical care to patients in the high dependency and intensive care units of the small animal hospital.
  • To maximise the opportunities available for continued personal training and development and to work closely with the appointed clinical supervisor to ensure this is achieved.
  • To contribute to the implementation and validation of clinical quality assurance measures.
  • To participate in practical/professional and/or clinical practice bodies related to the service area at national and international level as appropriate.
  • To participate in promotional activities and events relating to the Small Animal Hospital.
  • To ensure compliance with the continuing professional development requirements of the RCVS.

Teaching

  • To engage in the delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching activities, as directed by the Head of Small Animal Clinical Sciences in consultation with the course leaders.
  • To support the development of creative and innovative approaches to teaching and learning, in accordance with the University’s Quality Enhancement Strategy, so that the educational opportunities available to students are maintained or improved.

Administration

  • To contribute to performance and development review processes as appropriate in accordance with University strategy.
  • To undertake divisional/school level administration as requested by the Head of School/Division.
  • To contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

  • Essential Knowledge/Qualifications
    • Veterinary degree registrable with RCVS.
  • Desirable Knowledge/Qualifications
    • Full eligibility for or holds post graduate qualification in relevant discipline (internal medicine or emergency and critical care).
  • Essential Skills
    • High standard of communication skills both orally and written.
    • Ability to work as part of a team.
    • Ability to work independently.
    • Self motivated, able to plan for contingencies and think strategically.
    • Ability to provide medical care to small animal emergency patients in the small animal hospital.
    • Expertise across the field, corresponding to training and qualifications, and ability to provide advice to clinicians and external veterinary surgeons.
  • Desirable Skills
    • High standard of presentation skills.
    • Understanding and experience of databases and other IT applications/packages.
  • Essential Experience
    • Post graduate clinical experience in Veterinary Surgery.
  • Desirable Experience
    • Post graduate clinical experience in small animal OOH emergency service.

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 7, £41,064 – £46,049 per annum pro rata, plus 30% Out of Hours allowance.

This post is part time (7 hours per week), and open ended.
