The role:

An exciting opportunity has arisen within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde for a motivated individual with appropriate leadership and management experience and skills. The North Sector Medical Services Business Manager position is a varied and rewarding role, supporting the senior management team in service delivery within Glasgow Royal Infirmary and Stobhill Ambulatory Care Hospital. This engaging post encompasses a broad remit, requiring the successful candidate to work flexibly across both acute and ambulatory care settings. You will be directly involved in operational planning, budgetary oversight and resource allocation, ensuring that patient care remains at the forefront of organisational priorities.

In collaboration with the Clinical Service Manager and General Manager, you will be responsible for implementing and maintaining processes and services that support local, organisational and national quality, service and governance objectives, including performance review. This involves monitoring key performance indicators, contributing to quality improvement initiatives, and helping to drive service development in line with NHS standards. You will be expected to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and actively participate in audits and reviews, fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

The Business Manager will work closely with the senior team in the delivery of acute inpatient and outpatient services, ensuring alignment with access standards and best practice. This will include working to streamline patient pathways, reduce waiting times, and ensure efficient use of resources. You will also oversee the evaluation of resources and systems within Medical Specialties to promote both quality and efficiency. This may involve reviewing staffing levels, managing contracts, liaising with external partners, and supporting the introduction of new technologies or care models.

The postholder is expected to adopt an innovative and dynamic approach to this role while providing operational support to the senior management team. This means proactively identifying opportunities for service enhancement, championing change and supporting colleagues through periods of transformation.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills will be essential, as you will be required to engage regularly with clinical staff, patients and external stakeholders. The role offers a unique opportunity to make a substantial impact on healthcare delivery within two of Glasgow’s key hospitals, contributing positively to patient outcomes and organisational success.

This role is offered as a second ment opportunity, and candidates must secure approval for secondment from their substantive post within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde at the time of application.

Duration, Location and Working Pattern:

  • Location based in Glasgow Royal Infirmary
  • Fixed term/secondment contract for 12 months
  • Full time position (36 hours per week)
  • Shift pattern: Monday – Friday 09 30 (1 day) and 09 30 (4 days)

Key responsibilities:

  • Develop, undertake and evaluate surveys or audits to gather, extract, collate and analyse data to identify problem areas, data quality issues or gaps.
  • Assist in the delivery and achievement of operational targets and HEAT Standards including 4 hour A&E waiting times, 12 week referral to a first outpatient appointment, 18 week referral to treatment, 4% sickness absence and cancer waiting times.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of local organisational policies within the team.
  • Assist with the recruitment and selection of staff, organisation of induction programme and provision of training as required.
  • Assist in the complaints management process by developing monitoring systems to ensure complaints are investigated thoroughly within target timescales and by liaising with colleagues to develop action plans where improvement is required.
  • Assist in the delivery of the Clinical Governance Agenda, monitoring the Significant Clinical Incident process and ensuring learning points are shared.
  • Work with the Clinical Services Manager to manage and lead the junior doctor workforce, including recruitment and compliance with Human Resource policies.
  • Oversee the rota administration team to manage junior doctor workforce, rotas and ensure rota compliance.
  • Participate in annual Performance Development Plan, eKSF, iMatters and regular meetings with the General Manager and Clinical Services Managers.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

  • Graduate with a professional qualification or evidence of equivalent higher level study and/or relevant experience.
  • Experience working within NHS or a similar complex organisation and a deep knowledge of how the National Health Service operates.
  • Experience in a management role or equivalent position with extensive knowledge of policy and strategy.
  • Commitment to continuous professional development.
  • Excellent organisational, communication and interpersonal skills, ability to work to tight deadlines with conflicting priorities, work under pressure, use own initiative and multi task complex tasks simultaneously.
  • High level analytical, influencing and negotiating skills across a wide range of staff and ability to use initiative to solve difficult problems.
  • Skill in the presentation of reports and the use of information technology, in particular a good working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to communicate effectively at all levels and apply leadership skills in a range of situations.
