Morecambe Net Zero (MNZ) Project
Morecambe Net Zero (MNZ) is one of the UK’s most ambitious decarbonisation projects, transforming depleted gas fields in the East Irish Sea into a world class carbon storage hub.
THE OPPORTUNITY – GEOLOGIST/GEOPHYSICIST
Delivers specialist subsurface activities to achieve Spirit Energy’s strategic objective of commercialising carbon storage in the South Morecambe and North Morecambe carbon stores.

Duration: 1 year contract
Contract Type: PAYE
Responsibilities
- Static geological modelling.
- Geomechanical modelling.
- Containment Risk Assessment updates.
- Preparation of carbon storage development plan.
- Preparation of monitoring plan.
- Corrective measure plan.
- Post closure planning including decommissioning, post closure monitoring and handover plan.
- Manage the interface with supply chain partners for specialist technical inputs and studies (microbial, fault seal, etc.).
- Support the subsurface work programme(s) and ensure the company meets its NSTA carbon storage license commitments and deadlines while remaining aligned with the priorities and constraints of the business.
- Support work to successfully secure a carbon storage permit aligned with the requirements of the MNZ project portfolio.
- Maintain technical alignment with wells, above ground and commercial aspects of the proposed development.
- Promote Spirit Energy with stakeholders, including at conferences and other events, to build awareness and confidence in the technical competence of the business.
- Any other associated duties as reasonably required.
Qualifications
- Deep subsurface technical subject matter expertise in geology and/or geophysics pertaining to carbon storage development.
- Recognised and trusted industry expert.
- Good understanding of the UK carbon storage regulatory regime including licensing, work programme fulfilment and permit application and award.
- Educated to degree level, ideally MSc in a relevant discipline such as Geophysics or Earth Science.
