Overview

We are currently recruiting for an experienced leader to join our team at Tarmac’s Cement Plant in Dunbar, Scotland. The Shift Manager plays a critical role in managing the process plant and people from the raw material stores through to dispatch, ensuring that work is carried out safely, efficiently, and in compliance with safety, environmental, planning, and company guidelines. While the role is primarily a day shift position, flexibility to cover occasional night work, weekends, bank holidays, and on call duties is required. This role is key to maintaining high levels of safety, efficiency, and regulatory compliance, and involves building strong relationships across the site and wider company. You will report to the Production Manager and have line management responsibility for shift supervisors on site.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Safety
    • Promote a safety first culture.
    • Apply highest standards rigorously in accordance with CRH 16 Rules and legal requirements.
    • Organise regular toolbox talks and review isolation procedures on a routine basis.
    • Ensure risk assessments and methods statements are completed.
    • Perform regular Safety Leadership Interactions (SLIs).
  • Management, Leadership & Communication
    • Manage 24/7 operations of the teams, ensuring standards and productivity with safe working practices.
    • Foster a culture of teamwork within the production department and handle employee relations situations appropriately.
    • Drive the annual performance cycle and hold regular one to one meetings with direct reports.
    • Ensure shift teams are covered during absences.
    • Manage production department contractors.
    • Develop the team, drive improved job performance and satisfaction while attaining production objectives.
    • Propose suitable training programmes for operations personnel and ensure approved programmes are carried out.
  • Operational Excellence – Decreasing Costs
    • Maintain awareness of plant operating costs and consider these in decision making and industrial impacts.
    • Reduce variable costs by minimising disruption costs, power consumption and improving fuel economy.
    • Promote a continuous improvement culture.
    • Maintain awareness of the automation system control strategy and recommend continuous improvements.
    • Challenge shift managers on production cost control.
    • Manage purchase requisitions and purchase orders through SAP.
  • Operational Excellence – Increasing Productivity & Reliability
    • Coordinate interventions in case of breakdowns and troubleshoot, inspect and maintain plant equipment.
    • Participate in RCAs by collecting and preparing data for discussion.
    • Liaise with engineering, process and other technical functions to increase reliability and performance.
    • Ensure the production inspector and shift teams undertake first level inspections, record findings in SAP PM and take corrective actions.
    • Communicate critical sensor issues in shift logs and prioritize recurring faults in cross functional meetings.
    • Manage stocks of critical raw materials such as clinker, limestone, gypsum, tyres, PSP, SRF and ammonia.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Demonstrable operational and leadership experience in a similar role, potentially with an engineering background.
  • Ability to develop a team and provide evidence of such development.
  • Flexible, self motivated with a positive attitude towards work.
  • Commitment to maintaining and improving health, safety and environmental standards across the department and site.
