About this opportunity

We are looking for a Senior Ecologist to join our team in Edinburgh. The role involves supporting renewable energy and infrastructure projects across a range of critical projects, delivering surveys and reporting in collaboration with ecology colleagues and other environmental disciplines.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain relationships with existing and new clients.
  • Prepare tenders and support business development activities.
  • Scope and manage projects from small to large scale.
  • Plan, manage, and deliver terrestrial and freshwater ecological surveys using various survey methods.
  • Negotiate with statutory agencies, NGOs, and other stakeholders.
  • Write and author technical reports, including preliminary Ecological Appraisals and Ecological Impact Assessments.
  • Support clients on site during construction, restoration, and monitoring phases.
  • Mentor junior members of the Atmos Ecology Team.
  • Operate in accordance with the CIEEM Professional Code of Conduct.

Core Technical Skills

  • Habitat and terrestrial/freshwater species survey, monitoring, assessment, and reporting.
  • Species survey and development licensing application and delivery experience (e.g., bats, great crested newt, otter, water vole, badger).
  • Ecological/Environmental Clerk of Works (ECoW / EnvCoW).
  • Ornithology survey, monitoring, assessment, and reporting.
  • Hydrological monitoring.
  • Biodiversity planning and net gain advice.
  • Peatland condition assessment, coring, and restoration.

Who we are looking for

A BSc or MSc in a relevant subject with a minimum of three years’ experience.

An associate or full member of CIEEM or a relevant professional body.

Strong field experience with ambition to develop technical skills.

Ability to work on site with contractors and client staff.

Full awareness of UK legislation and guidance frameworks.

Robust project management skills with the ability to plan and deliver within budgets and deadlines.

Excellent report writing skills and attention to detail.

Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to advise clients and support junior staff.

Health and safety awareness, including risk assessment and safe working practices in ecology fieldwork.

Full current driving licence.
