The role
Band 5 Registered Learning Disability nurses are needed to join the Specialist Learning Disability Inpatient nursing team. The Specialist Learning Disability Service provides assessment and treatment inpatient services to people with a learning disability who experience mental ill health and/or associated challenging behaviour or complex needs.
Duration, Location, and Working Pattern
There are 2 permanent posts available at 36 hours per week. The location is Munro ward, Stobhill. Shift pattern is Monday – Sunday shifts.
Key responsibilities CLINICAL
- Assist with the overall care, support and management of patients including participation in Named and Associate nursing models of care.
- Provide comprehensive reports both verbally and in writing to the senior charge nurse/charge nurse, medical staff and other disciplines as necessary, including maintenance of patients’ records. Maintain a high standard of written and verbal communication in accordance with NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and the Nursing and Midwifery Council standards and guidelines.
- Observe and adhere to all current Mental Health legislation, i.e. Mental Health (Care and Treatment) (Scotland) Act 2003 and Adults with Incapacity (Scotland) Act 2000.
- Cover in the absence of senior colleagues, providing relevant care and taking charge of the ward when necessary.
- Be aware of and adhere to all Local, HSCP, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and National Policies, Procedures and Guidelines.
- Maintain good communication with patients, patients’ relatives and representatives and other professional colleagues, adhering to all confidentiality requirements.
- Respond immediately to incidents and emergencies both within and outside the own area.
- Safeguard the interests and wellbeing of patients at all times, adhering to NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde policies and the Nurses and Midwives Council Code of Professional Conduct.
EDUCATIONAL
- Participate in staff development initiatives, e.g. personal development plans and teaching programmes, direct and supervise junior staff and assist in the teaching of learners.
MANAGERIAL
- Support the senior charge nurse in the immediate management of suggestions or complaints.
- When in charge of shift, supervise staff rostered on duty (Other qualified staff, Nursing Assistants, Students, Support Workers), organise own workload & delegate work, alter routine as and when required meeting unpredictable needs of the patients/ward.
- Carry out general management duties on a day to day basis.
HEALTH & SAFETY
- Be aware of and adhere to all relevant Health and Safety regulations, including fire procedures, moving and handling techniques and procedures, management of aggression and control of substances hazardous to health regulations.
Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job
- Qualified RNLD, first or second level.
- Management of Aggression training.
- Manual Handling training.
- Current Mental Health Legislation and Adults with Incapacity (Scotland) Act.
- Induction Training.
- Control of Infection training.
- Health & Safety awareness.
- Fire lecture.
- Basic Life Support.
