We are looking for an enthusiastic and committed Consultant to join the HIV/Sexual Health & Contraception team in Brighton – the first UK Fast Track City.

This is a substantive post, 10 sessions negotiable, joining a team of 8.3 WTE consultants providing integrated Sexual Health, Contraception and HIV services within Brighton arm of University Hospitals Sussex NHS Trust.

Key responsibilities include providing HIV inpatient care alongside other colleagues for a minimum of 14 weeks per year, delivering a high quality, fully integrated Sexual Health and Contraception service, supervising and training nursing, junior medical staff and medical students, and participating in research and service improvement.

The post holder will be part of the senior management team, contributing to the administration and leadership of the department, and participating in clinical governance and quality improvement.

The post holder will also be part of the non-resident on-call rota (1:10), including staffing a Saturday sexual health clinic (10.00-14.00) and covering HIV inpatients in RSCH and other HIV inpatients in Brighton and Hove, and providing telephone advice across the Sussex HIV network.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide a regular HIV clinic, including supporting activities such as viral load meetings, M&M and therapeutic and protocol meetings.
  • Provide HIV inpatient care for a minimum of 14 weeks of the year.
  • Support admission avoidance activity within the Lawson Unit through triage and assessment of patients.
  • Provide complex case management as part of routine clinics and in specialist joint clinics as required.
  • Take part and lead routine sexual health and contraception clinics.
  • Take part in a Saturday sexual health clinic 1:10 when on call.
  • Work closely and liaise with colleagues and external agencies.
  • Support junior colleagues in clinics to provide excellent care for patients.
  • Ensure appropriate specialist service provision during the working week across all clinical sites, with expert advice available to other service providers.

Person specification – Experience / Qualifications

  • MRCP or recognised equivalent.
  • Full and specialist registration (with licence to practise) with GMC, or be eligible for registration within six months of interview. If trained in the UK, must have a Certificate of Completion of Training in specialty or be within six months of receiving it by interview. If trained outside the UK, provide evidence of equivalent qualifications.
  • Diploma in HIV medicine.
  • Diploma in GU medicine.
  • College of Sexual & Reproductive Health Diploma (CoSRH).
  • Higher degree.
  • Diploma of the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare (DFSRH).

Clinical Skills and Experience

  • Clinical experience of HIV inpatient care.
  • Clinical skills consistent with CCT in GUM.
  • Evidence of having undertaken own development to improve understanding of equality issues.
  • LoC in implant and IUC fitting.

Knowledge

  • Breadth of experience in and outside specialty.

Organisation and Planning

  • Experience and ability to work in multi-professional teams.
  • Evidence of managerial skills: achievements or courses attended.

Teaching

  • Evidence of interest and commitment to teaching.
  • Recognised teaching qualification.

Academic and Research

  • Evidence of interest and participation in research and publications.
  • Higher research degree.

  • Appropriate progression of career to date.

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
