NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde health board is one of the largest health boards in the UK and home to major specialist services for the West of Scotland and the wider population of Scotland in addition to a full range of secondary care services. Rotational pharmacists within the North Service provide patient focussed clinical pharmacy services to a varied group of patients and are active members of the multidisciplinary team, advising and promoting the safe and effective use of medicines and supporting technician led medicines management initiatives. The Band 6 rotation includes medical specialties, surgery, care of older people, oncology, aseptic and dispensary services. The North Sector rotational posts are mainly based at Glasgow Royal Infirmary but also include Gartnavel General Hospital and the Vale of Leven Hospital. These vacancies are only open to those who are currently on the GPhC register as pharmacists. Continuous professional development is encouraged and supported. Duration, Location, and Working Pattern
- Location based in Glasgow Royal Infirmary
- Permanent Contract
- Full-time Position (36 hours per week)
- Shift Pattern – The post holder will work a 5 over 7 day shift pattern and will be required to participate in weekend working, late working until 6pm, Public Holiday working and out of hours on call service.
Key responsibilities
- Develop competence and deliver pharmaceutical care to patients in designated wards as part of a multidisciplinary team, ensuring safe and cost effective prescribing and administration of medicines, including contributing to safe and secure handling procedures
- Identify, prioritise, document and action all pharmaceutical care issues for in-patient groups including drug history taking, pharmaceutical care planning, and continual monitoring of patient factors (e.g. other medical conditions, test results and response to treatment).
- Ensure discharge prescriptions are transcribed correctly and are clinically appropriate
- Participate in ward rounds and clinical multidisciplinary meetings where appropriate.
- Provide and document medicines information and advice on request in accordance with department policies and procedures. This involves execution of appropriate search strategies to retrieve relevant information, critically evaluating the information and preparing a response that is appropriate to the enquirer’s needs.
- Undertake and record the post-registration foundation training programme
- Attend and participate in educational and training programmes, peer review meetings, courses and other activities to develop skills as part of commitment to continuing professional development
- Assist in the supervision, training and development of pharmacy undergraduates, pre-registration pharmacy graduates, technicians and other staff, including nursing and medical staff, as required.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job
Master’s degree in pharmacy or equivalent is essential
- Foundation training year completed, and examination passed is essential
- Be willing to undertake the post-registration foundation training programme
