Consultant Speech and Language Therapist – Adult Learning Disabilities

Based in Inverness – Permanent 0.80 WTE Post

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, suitably qualified and experienced Consultant Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) wishing to take a leading role for Adult Learning Disabilities (ALD) across North Highland.

The ALD Team has an establishment of this current post (0.78 WTE) plus a full time Band 6 SLT and part time Band 4 and Band 3 SLT Support Workers. The fully integrated ALD service is based in the Corbett Centre, in Inverness and provides services to the NHS Highland North HSCP, i.e. Inverness Shire, Ross Shire, Lochaber, Skye, Lochalsh, Caithness and Sutherland.

  • Leadership, development and provision of a dynamic specialist Speech and Language Therapy service to adults with learning disabilities and/or autistic spectrum disorders who have communication and/or eating and drinking difficulties.
  • Specialist professional leadership for the members of the ALD SLT team and wider team to maintain excellent standards of service, promote team cohesion and provide strategic guidance and oversight for the current ALD service into the wider MDT.
  • Day to day co ordination of ALD SLT service delivery.
  • Highly specialist clinical input to the ALD service and a specialist overview and support as a consultancy service to adults with learning disabilities, their carers and other statutory voluntary bodies.
  • Complex case management.
  • Strategic guidance for the Adult SLT Head of Service and the AHP Lead.
  • Clinical leadership and strategic direction and oversight for the Speech and Language Therapy service for adults with learning disabilities in North Highland.
  • Advice and education for the multidisciplinary/SLT teams as required, undertaking specialist teaching within the clinical areas of ALD to a diverse range of professionals, carers and students and supervise less experienced therapists.

Line management and professional support for the ALD team, including this post, is provided by the North Highland Adult SLT Head of Service.

The ALD SLT Team sits within the wider SLT adult team which is a friendly and dynamic team of 20 Speech and Language Therapists serving the North Highland Area, and covering the full range of Adult Acquired specialisms.

The SLT Team has a strong commitment to Professional Development, supervision and Quality improvement.

Applicants will require extensive relevant experience of working in ALD SLT and will be able to demonstrate excellent leadership and strategic planning skills as well as excellent communication skills.

A BSc, or equivalent, in Speech Pathology and Therapeutics, is essential, and registration with the Health and Care Professions Council. Registration with RCSLT is preferred.

As this is a Highland wide post, travel is an essential part of this role therefore a driving licence is required.
