Job Title: General Manager – Steel Distributor

To continued expansion, this company wish to appoint a General Manager to drive the companies flagship site in the north east of Scotland. The General Manager will play a pivotal role in overseeing the efficient operation of our depot facility while also shouldering full Profit and Loss (P&L) responsibility. This position requires strong leadership, operational acumen, financial management skills, and a deep understanding of the steel distribution industry.
- Operational Management:
Supervise and lead all depot operations including receiving, inventory management, storage, order fulfillment, and dispatching.
Ensure compliance with safety regulations and best practices in all operational activities.
Implement efficient processes to optimize workflow and minimize operational costs.
- Team Leadership:
Recruit, train, and manage a competent team of depot staff, including supervisors, warehouse workers, and administrative personnel.
Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement within the depot team.
- Inventory Management:
Oversee inventory control processes to maintain accurate stock levels and minimize discrepancies.
Implement inventory tracking systems and procedures to monitor stock movements, identify trends, and prevent stockouts or overages.
- Customer Service:
Ensure exceptional customer service standards are maintained at all times, addressing customer inquiries, concerns, and complaints promptly and effectively.
Collaborate with the sales team to fulfill customer orders accurately and on time.
- Financial Management:
Develop and manage the depot budget, forecasting expenses, and revenue projections to achieve financial targets.
Analyze financial performance metrics, identify areas for improvement, and implement cost-saving measures without compromising service quality.
- Vendor and Supplier Management:
Build and maintain strong relationships with steel suppliers, negotiating favorable terms and pricing agreements.
Monitor supplier performance and quality to ensure adherence to agreed-upon standards.
- Health, Safety, and Compliance:
Ensure compliance with all relevant health, safety, and environmental regulations governing depot operations.
Implement and enforce safety protocols and procedures to minimize workplace accidents and injuries.
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Supply Chain Management, or related field (preferred).
- Proven experience (5+ years) in a managerial role within the steel distribution industry or a similar environment.
- Strong understanding of depot operations, inventory management, and logistics processes.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate teams to achieve operational excellence and meet performance targets.
- Proficient in financial management, budgeting, and P&L analysis.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
- Familiarity with relevant health, safety, and environmental regulations.
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite and inventory management software.
