Role Overview

Reporting to the Operations Manager, this is a pivotal role within the production team and an excellent opportunity for an experienced and detail- oriented EDM Programmer / Operator to work with advanced wire and spark erosion technologies.

The successful candidate will be responsible for programming, setting, and operating EDM machinery to manufacture high-tolerance components for complex engineering applications, contributing directly to the companys continued growth and technical excellence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Program and operate CNC EDM wire and spark erosion machines (Agi Charmilles and Makino).
  • Interpret technical drawings, CAD models, and engineering specifications.
  • Create and modify CNC programs using CAM software.
  • Select appropriate electrodes, wires, and machining parameters for optimal performance and surface finish.
  • Set up workpieces using jigs, fixtures, and precision measuring tools.
  • Conduct in-process inspections using micrometres, height gauges, and CMM equipment (where applicable).
  • Monitor machine performance and carry out routine maintenance.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, engineering, and quality teams to meet project deadlines and specifications.
  • Ensure adherence to safety procedures and quality standards.
  • Maintain accurate documentation for job tracking, tooling setup, and quality assurance.
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement and uphold Safety, Health, Environmental, and Quality standards.
  • Attend team and client meetings as required.

Shift Patterns & Pay

  • 2 weeks day shift: MonThurs 7:00am3:00pm, Fri 7:00am2:30pm
  • 2 weeks night shift: MonWed 9:00pm7:00am, Thurs 9:30pm7:00am
  • Constant night shift option available

Pay & Overtime:

  • Day shift rate: £20.68 per hour
  • Night shift rate: £27.50 per hour (approx. x1.33)
  • Overtime: 1.5x (days), 1.75x (nights)
  • Weekend overtime: 2x rate
  • 37.5- hour working week

Qualifications & Experience

Essential:

  • Proven experience as an EDM operator/programmer (minimum 3 years preferred).
  • Strong understanding of wire EDM and die sinking principles and technologies.
  • Proficiency in CNC programming and CAM software.
  • Ability to interpret complex engineering drawings and GD&T.
  • Experience producing tight-tolerance, high-precision components (0.005mm or better).
  • Excellent organisational skills, attention to detail, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong commitment to workplace safety and continuous improvement.

Desirable:

  • Experience with CAD design software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD).
  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing and 5S principles.
  • Previous experience in Oil & Gas, Aerospace, or Defence engineering environments.
